Will You Be Bored Without Alcohol?
Dec 12, 2022Will You Be Bored Without Alcohol?
A lot of people tell me that they are drinking so much just because they are bored or lonely. I understand this perfectly because as someone with a hyper-busy mind I too used alcohol to give me some peace from the monotony.
I had meant to write about this for a while, and I had almost forgotten about it until I got this email:
My name is Jane, I've been sober for 11 months now, and I had been drinking for about 12 years. You are the first person to offer the clarity that I have been searching for. I won't go into my personal situation too much, but my question has to do with enhancement.
I used alcohol as an enhancement.. regularly. I mean everything, looking forward to watching my favorite show, cooking a meal and so on.
Let me explain a little.
I was out on an ankle monitor as a result of a DUI, so I was forced to stop, and I thank God for that, but now it's come off. I want more than anything to maintain not drinking and plan to. I guess I'm wondering how I stop thinking about that illusion of how my favorite things are amplified when adding alcohol to them. And is there any way to replace it? I hope this makes sense.
Please reply or make a video. I can't express how much I respect you for merely giving people the truth and facts; it's genuinely the only approach to dealing with this drug that has ever made absolute sense to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
The Answer
So Jane (name changed) I am going to reply AND make a video for you.
Just like everything else with this drug, the apparent benefit of 'reducing boredom' and 'making life more exciting' is a devious illusion and nothing more. Alcohol does not have the power to change external situations and thus does not have any capacity to really make things more interesting.
Alcohol is not a magic liquid, but it is a mild anesthetic. When you go in for an operation at the hospital, they inject you with a chemical that slows down the speed of your brain. Imagine an old record player playing a 45RPM album at 33RPM (wow we are getting old school there Craig). The anesthetic they use in a hospital is very potent and very efficient. It slows your brain function down to a level approaching brain death.
Not A Magic Liquid
During an operation your brain is operating so slowly it can't do much else than keep your vital organs running. It is not even possible to dream never mind something as complex as process pain signals from some remote region of the body.
Alcohol has a similar impact on the brain but to a much lesser degree. The glass of wine that you think is helping you relax is just slowing down and retarding the functionality of your mind. The result is you become less mentally capable.
Let me put it in a very blunt way. Alcohol makes you stupid. Stupid people don't need much to keep them entertained. For example, one of my dogs is called Zoia. The best, most exciting thing on planet earth to Zoia is chasing after a ball.
Seriously, she almost wets herself with excitement when she sees you pick up her ball. We had to restrict her access to it because she loves it so much, she would play all day if she could.
Zoia thinks chasing a ball is crazy exciting. Do you know why? Because she's stupid! We tried her at chess, but she couldn't master the rules of the game and just wanted us to throw the little pieces for her.
An Important Question
So, with this knowledge on the table, let me ask you an important question. When you get to the end of this journey, and you are laying on your death bed, reminiscing about your life. Do you believe you will at that moment wish you had spent more of your life as a stupid zombie?
Stupidity is not an aspiration, any sober logically thinking person can see that. Do you really miss being less than you are?
Don't worry that you will be bored without alcohol. Wake up and see the opportunity ahead!
